While installing PowerFactory I get the error "Windows Installer Error Code 5" or "Windows Installer Error Code 32" and the installation fails. How can I solve this issue?

Answer

If during the PowerFactory installation, the process fails with a ‘Windows Installer Error Code 5’ or ‘Windows Installer Error Code 32’, then your system has denied the necessary access rights to the PowerFactory installation program. This typically happens when an anti-virus application(s) does not "trust" the PowerFactory installer. The following steps will help to resolve this problem:

1. Navigate to the location of the PowerFactory installation executable, right-click on it and choose the context menu entry ‘Properties’. In the Properties dialog, switch to the tab "Digital Signatures". The signature list should show exactly two entries and both of them should show "DIgSILENT GmbH" as "Name of signer". If there is no ‘Digital Signatures’ tab or the list entries are missing or differ, this means that the installer executable:
- has not been correctly downloaded OR
- it has been manipulated by a third party;
If the "Digital Signatures" tab or the list entries are missing or differ, then do notify your IT-Administrator immediately. In this case and – after making sure your system was not compromised - ask them to download the PowerFactory installation application from the official DIgSILENT Download Area. Only continue with the next step if the digital signatures of the downloaded file are correct.

2. Once you have verified that the PowerFactory installation application is signed by DIgSILENT (see Step 1), contact your IT administrator and ask them to whitelist the application in all installed anti-virus applications.

3. With the PowerFactory installation application white-listed, install PowerFactory again.

4. If the installation fails with the same error message (Windows Installer Error Code 5), contact your IT administrator again and ask them to temporarily disable all anti-virus applications and try to install PowerFactory again. If the installation fails with a different error message, please contact DIgSILENT Support and provide the corresponding log file.
