How do you record RMS signals such as voltages and currents in EMT simulations?

Answer

In an EMT simulation, the result variables are recorded as instantaneous values. In order to record RMS signals such as voltages and current, the instantaneous have to be converted to RMS values.

The following two options are available at the moment:

  1. DSL Model:
    • The RMS voltages / currents are recorded by Common model
    • The Common model is linked to a Composite model that is linked to a VT / CT
    • RMS values are calculated by the Common model
  2. Relay Model:
    • The RMS voltages / currents are recorded by the Measurement block of a relay model
    • The Relay model is linked to a VT / CT
    • RMS values are calculated by the Measurement block
    • Please note that the use of the relay model / measurement block required a protection license

In the attached project "RMS values in EMT simulation (DSL)" the RMS voltages and currents are derived, using a corresponding DSL model.

In the attached project "RMS values in EMT simulation (Relay)" the RMS voltages and currents are derived, using a corresponding Relay model.
