How do you model overhead lines and cables in PowerFactory?

Answer

Depending on the available input data and the kind of study (e.g. steady state, RMS or EMT) different line models (Types) are required and available in PowerFactory.

The following models are available for overhead lines:

  • TypLne
  • TypTow
  • TypGeo

The following models are available for cable systems:

  • TypLne
  • TypCabsys with TypCab
  • TypCabsys with TypCabmult

The element *.ElmLne is used to represent lines in PowerFactory. The different Types documented above are selected as models and assigned to the line element (*.ElmLne).

For more complex models such as double circuit overhead lines, the explicit modelling of earth wires or the sheaths of cables, “Line Couplings” / “Cable System” are defined.

Line Couplings (*.ElmTow) are used to define an overhead line system with more than one circuit, for example:

  • Double circuit overhead line
  • Single phase overhead line with an explicit model of the earth wire

Line couplings which define an overhead line system are configured as follows: mark the lines which define the overhead line system => right click one of the lines => Define => Line Coupling => select the appropriate *.TypTow or *.TypGeo.

Cable Systems (*.ElmCabsys) are used to define a cable system with more than one circuit or an explicit model of the sheath. Cable systems are defined as follows: mark the lines which define the cable system => Right click => Define => Cable System => select the appropriate *.TypCabsys

For all line models both lumped and distributed parameter line models with constant and frequency-dependent parameters are available and provide adequate models for all power system studies.

The attached slides in “Line_Models_in_PowerFactory.pdf” illustrate the different line Types and Elements in PowerFactory.

The attached PowerFactory project “Overhead Line and Cable Models.pfd” provides examples of the different lines models in PowerFactory.
